So its time to show you the final product, the Portable Baby Bottle Warmer, in the following video I will show this PBBW Works, i really enjoyed making this device, im really glad of what i have accomplished.

PCB Assembly and REV-B of the board

The PCBs finally arrive, and it is time to test if anything went wrong, or if we need to make the Rev-B of the board, It almost works as spect it but i decided to make some changes in the board to increase the specs. This the board with all the components on their respective places.

The new specs will be that we can light the PBBW in more tones that just the Red, Green and Blue LEDs one at a time as I put a single resistor in the common anode of the RGB LED, in that configuration just one color of each RGB LED can be turn on at the same time, but if we add a resistor for each LED we could make some color combinations, like a nice rainbow contained in our device. I have also change the form factor of the Buzzer, now it will be a SMT.

So let me show you how the new schematic looks like:

So now we are ready to send the GERBER Files for fabrication, and in a week from now you will see working.

So the electronic part of the project its going to be very simple, but a good look.
This circuit would drive the heater element by reading a temperature sensor and adjusting the heater activation accordingly, but the special effects, the visual and good look of this will be 8 RGB LEDs with a shape of a ring like in the image of the concept design idea, this board should also be capable of charging the battery and respond to a human interface, in this case 3 push-buttons.

This is the schematic i made for this task.

3D Concept Idea of the Portable baby bottle warmer

In order to the electronics to take place in the design of the project its necessary to know how it would the product would behave, the interface to the user and the aspect of it ( Dimensions). That is why i decided to make some 3D drawings of how i imagine the product would look like in real life and try to make it according the specifications i talked about in the first post of this project.

So this is how i would like it look like:
In order to this concept idea to work i have drawn the following functional parts that you can see in the following exploded view.
The white pieces will be ABS plastic and the red one will be a translucent acrylic plastic for the Wurth RGB LEDs as an interface (visual interface) with the user, representing by its color the current, target temperature and notifications, the electronics and battery should be contained in the bottom part of this baby bottle warmer.

As a heating element i would like to use a Thermoelectric cell, in the bottom side will cool the MOSFET that will drive it and in the top side it will warm the baby feeding bottle, in this way i will not need a special heatsink for the MOSFET to cool it down.

So this are some of the part that will make posible this idea:

In the next post we will start by designing the electronics that will fit the bottom part of this design and the Wuth's Wireless Power Module.

Connecting a different load to the Wireless Power Kit

Connecting another load to the Wireless Power Kit its pretty straight forward, as simple as to solder two cables. In this case I tried another LED module, but this with higher power specifications.

 In order to connect this load first of all we need to find the following pads labeled VOUT and GND, this pads and pins are capable of provide 10v @1A - in other words 10W output power.

This way we have the specified power output described above, now lets mesure the Voltage and Current:

Voltage reading of 10.02 volts of 10 volts specified. 

Current capabilities of 1.1 Amps (10W)

So this kit by it self its capable of recharging a two cell battery without a problem and very fast also.
We could charge a two cell battery of 1000mAh rated 1C for charge within just 1 hour, that sounds good enough for our application.

Now that we now the power output capabilities we can select our battery and battery charger for our Feeding Baby Bottle Warmer. In the next post i will show what I will use as a heater element that will be in charge of getting the baby bottle at the right temperature.

Wurth Electronics & ROHM's Wireless Power Kit 

Lets begin describing what is in this kit and what is it for, this kit is a practical to begin and to understand how Wireless Power works, this kit contains:

- Wireless Power Transmitter
- Wireless Power Receiver
- LED Load Module
- Power adapter

So this is the Transmitter:

This is the receiver with the LED load module attached:

With this two modules we can already do wireless power of 15W and connected to any device that accepts a voltage around 10 volts connected to the receiver module. Lets see them in action!

It really looks pretty amazing don't you think!?

Next week i will post how to connect another load to this KIT in a fast and a simple way before we get to start the design accordingly with our needs.

A week ago I received an email of Wurth Electronics telling me that i was selected to participate in the OFF THE CLOCK DESIGN CHALLENGE, this challenge consist in creating a product using their Wireless Charging KIT, this challenge will be 12 weeks challenge in which I will be posting all my decisions and updates of my project, to read more about this challenge click here.

What is my project for OCDC (Off the clock design challenge)?
- It's a Portable Baby Bottle Warmer (PBBW)

What does a PBBW is used for? why a PBBW? Let me explain the idea of this project.

A lot of parents are in constant movement, at work, to meetings, etc. Today there is not much time to simple things like to warm up the baby feeding bottle, that kind of task will just take a few minutes, but do we really always have that time? or are we always in the right place at the right moment to accomplish that kind of task, the answer, no, not always. This is why I would like to start this project using the Wurth's coils to do a wireless charging of this device to make more easy the way we warm up a baby feeding bottle.

This PBBW will be able to warm up a standard size of baby feeding bottle anywhere and a fast charge of the battery with out connecting cables to it. It will have light notifications to inform us the temperature TARGET, STATE and READY notifications, i will use the Wurth's RGB LEDs to give this kind notifications, and also to make the interaction with the users more natural and self explained.

Now, some specifications:

  1.  3 times baby feeding bottle warm-up cycles or more.
  2.  Rechargeable wireless battery.
  3.  Target temperature set by user from 26 to 36 ºC.
  4.  Full color light notifications.
  5.  Portable size, Standard baby feeding bottle size.
